The Rise of Secret Cyborgs

I have been hanging out in a lot of Generative AI (artificial intelligence) play spaces with people who are interested in and messing around with the tools. I noticed a compelling phenomenon – the rise of ‘secret cyborgs’ in workplaces. After Ethan Mollak introduced the concept through his article “Detecting the Secret Cyborg.”  These individuals aren’t entities in sci-fi stories but everyday professionals who are silently integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their work. They represent a grassroots movement, a quiet yet significant revolution in how we approach productivity, creativity, and problem-solving in our professional lives.

This trend is not just about individual exploration or silent revolution. It’s a crucial wake-up call for organizational leaders and businesses. There’s an immense opportunity here to transform the workplace narrative around AI. Instead of viewing AI with apprehension, businesses can adopt a culture that supports and encourages AI exploration. This shift can transform secretive individual experimentation into a collaborative, innovative movement that benefits the entire organization.

The ‘secret cyborgs’ among us are potential vanguards of a new era in the workforce, where the integration of human intelligence and AI leads to unprecedented levels of efficiency, creativity, and problem-solving. Their story is a call to action for all of us in business to embrace AI with curiosity and openness, recognizing its potential as a transformative tool for human advancement.

As we navigate this exciting and uncharted territory, the key lies in fostering a culture where AI is not just accepted but actively integrated into our collective quest for innovation and excellence. Let’s embrace this change, leveraging AI to enhance our human potential and pave the way for a future where technology and creativity go hand in hand in shaping the next frontier of business success.

Innovation in the Rainforest

In the verdant expanses of a metaphorical rainforest*, our team has unearthed the distinctive essence of innovation that diverges sharply from the traditional advancements in sectors like agriculture. This revelation emerged from a deep-dive strategic collaboration with a prominent enterprise client in 2023.

From within the Content Evolution Federation, we assembled a team to engage in an exhaustive analysis of the prevailing innovation practices – globally. This rigorous examination constituted the groundwork from which we propelled ourselves to envision the “next” in innovation labs.

The compass that guides these next practices – the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) – is a true novelty entering the global arena without a label, defying categorization. Such groundbreaking innovation warps the fabric of the known, compelling a redefinition of everything within its orbit.

The year 2023 was a testament to this phenomenon with the rise of Generative AI. The domain burgeoned into a rainforest teeming with possibilities, akin to the intellectual awakening sparked by the invention of the Guttenberg Press. This new access to knowledge is shifting the ground we stand on. Drawing inspiration from living systems, innovation ignites progress that transcends logarithmic scales, igniting an era of exponential transformation.

Our CE team’s exploration has led us from the monochrome of replicable, mechanical uniformity to a spectrum of diversity, mirroring the thriving ecosystems of rainforests. We’ve learned to amplify diversity within a singular space and magnify it to a global scale, integrating varied thinking and action.

What makes our Innovation Rainforest thrive?

Venturing into the Innovation Rainforest is akin to stepping into a world where the ecosystem itself is designed to foster growth and evolution at an accelerated pace. Here, the traditional boundaries of creativity and productivity dissolve, giving way to space where ideas flourish.

Our approach begins with an assessment of innovation — a holistic view looking at the intricate interdependencies of ideas and environments. Just as a rainforest is a hotbed of biodiversity, our Innovation Rainforest concept champions a diversity of thought, experience, person and discipline. It is here that cross-pollination isn’t just a metaphor but a daily practice.

We’ve identified several core principles that serve as the nutrients for our Innovation Rainforest concept:

Diverse Ecosystems Foster Robust Ideas. We curate teams much like one might curate plant life in a botanical garden — ensuring a wide array of perspectives that can withstand and adapt to changing conditions.

Serendipity Through Design. By architecting spaces and processes that encourage unexpected connections, we lay the groundwork for new discoveries, much like the forest floor, which fosters new life from the fallen flora.

Emergent Growth. We recognize that the most groundbreaking innovations often emerge from the ‘edges’ — the interfaces between disciplines. Therefore, we create environments where these edges overlap and interact freely.

Sustainability and Scalability. Just as a rainforest thrives on the principles of sustainability, our innovation practices are designed to be sustainable over the long term, scaling from the individual creative act to global implementation.

Nurturing the Unseen. We acknowledge that, just as in a rainforest, the most crucial elements of innovation are often not immediately visible. We focus on nurturing these unseen undercurrents that will later become the pillars of change.

We find ourselves in our own fertile rainforest of interlinked ideas and methodologies, ready to be transplanted to innovative futures. In essence, our Innovation Rainforest is a living, breathing process. It’s a dynamic, self-sustaining system of innovation that seeks to bring forth the full potential of every idea seeded within it.

How To Build a GPT

Today, I was asked to provide a demo to a group on how to create a custom GPT using Open AI‘s ChatGPT-4. I put it up on YouTube so I could share it with folks. It’s a quick walk-through of the process of building, testing, adding knowledge, and saving public or private. If you are messing around in AI – ChatGPT isn’t the only game in town, but it is the easiest to date if you pay the twenty bucks a month for a subscription to Open AI. I am sharing this in case you are one of ‘the curious 18%’ of the population currently playing in Generative AI. If you are in the other 82%, bookmark this, and I’ll see you soon.
