Look Up

Tonight there will be a meteor shower called Eta Aquarids. The Eta Aquarids is an above average shower, capable of producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. Most of the activity will be in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, the rate can reach about 30 meteors per hour. The shower is produced by dust particles left behind by comet Halley, which has known and observed since ancient times. The shower runs annually from April 19 to May 28. It peaks this year on the night of May 6 and the morning of the May 7. The waning gibbous moon will block most of the fainter meteors this year, but you should be able to catch quite A few good ones if you are patient. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

Get outside and look up!

Makey Makey

Just add a banana!

Girls involved in tech and coding is the best. All of us at Laboratory5 love all things STEAM especially science and engineering so the Makey Makey concept gets us pretty excited. What can you do with a Makey Makey kit?You can turn everyday objects like bananas into touchpads! You can connect the world around you to your computer! You do not need any programing knowledge.  This is a great summer activity!

Educating with nature

At Tiny Trees school in Seattle education through interaction with nature is the name of the game.  I first heard about this place on an NPR story. I was so impressed that I had to investigate their activities. They have really figured out how to get kids outside. Their model should be used nationwide.

Check out their methods at TINY TREES

Here is what they have to say:

We help children learn to read, succeed at math and explore the wild where they receive both a world class science education and a gleefully muddy childhood: one full of play, exploration and wonder in the great outdoors.

Our mission is to use outdoor classrooms to make a quality education in reading, math and science affordable for families and to give children a joyful, nature rich childhood – one full of play, exploration and wonder.

Our vision is to create a community where all children have access to high quality education and develop the social, emotional and academic skills needed to thrive in school and life.

1977 Internet

As the internet of things creeps ever closer to an A.I. take over I am compelled to pause and think about where we are at with the internet. Our days begin and end with connecting online but have we given much thought to how the internet now connects all things and if all things are connected what do have left that we control in our lives? I pause and look back at this site map of the original internet of 1977.  Forty plus years later we have come a long way but is it for the best?

Order up a custom Night Sky

This is a fabulous gift idea – the website Create The Night Sky allows customers to select the date of an important event in their life and create a poster of what the night sky looked like on that very night.

This is the night sky on the night I was married in the year 2000. These would make great gifts as we head into the holiday season.

At Laboratory5 Inc. We bring together all elements of STEAM and tie them up into a package to promote the work each individual is doing in their fields to celebrate this work. We produce experiences so that those unfamiliar with the glorious, quirky, nerdy qualities of all areas of STEAM can be explored as an adventure to explain these fields.

AZ Sci Tech Festival

I am hosting five panels today at the AZ Sci Tech Festival. You can still attend and register on site at the Mesa Art Center.

I am also hosting a lunch meet up at the festival for those who want to create more experiences out of their STEAM and Sci-Tech events. HERE
