Art that Pops

In 2005 I ran into a friend from graduate school on the streets of SOHO in NYC. She worked at Scholastic at the time and we exchanged contact info. A few days later she contacted me and asked if I would create a kid’s creativity book for the Scholastic School Book Fair program. The requirements were few, mostly I just needed to create a book filled with imaginative tutorials including step by step images. I created this book and it was published in the Spring of 2006. It sold at school book fairs for a few years until it was retired.

Because this text is no longer available to purchase through Scholastic I have scanned it and am sharing it as a downloadable PDF. In a time of Covid-19 sheltering in place we need ideas to use our imagination. These are fun projects for kids and adults. Enjoy!

Thrive! The Creative’s Guidebook to Professional Tenacity

The book is complete, and I want to share it. This book grew out of a class I taught called Professional Practices at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts | Arizona State University (2010 – 2016). This book is filled with all of the class content but bigger than that  – it is a guide to encourage all creatives in their confidence and to get brave.

Rooted in the author’s experience as an entrepreneur and creative professional, Thrive! The Creative’s Guidebook to Professional Tenacity helps those in creative fields acquire the skills and tools needed to successfully market their talents and manage their careers. Speaking directly to how creatives think about and conduct business, the text is filled with engaging and accessible exercises, strategies, and tips.

The six units cover branding, searching for clients, asserting the value of creative work, pitching your talents, leveraging social and other media, managing finances and taxes, and more. Each chapter includes business terms creatives need to know, action tasks to prepare for the professional work ahead and specific guidance about how the content can be applied in the real world.

Fresh and innovative, Thrive! The Creative’s Guidebook to Professional Tenacity understands the importance of speaking to creative professionals in their own language and showing them how to leverage their outside-the-box skills to achieve professional and financial success. The book is ideal for anyone studying or working in the fields of art and design, or any creative endeavor.

Scientists discover a new blue

Discovered: The first new blue pigment in 200 years

Scientists discover a new blue, by accident of course, as is often the way with scientific discoveries. The color was discovered by chance by a group of Oregon State University chemists who were heating up chemicals to find new materials for electronics. They named it  YinMn (pronounced “yin-min”) which stands for the elements it’s made of: yitrium iridium, manganese, and oxygen.

They continue to search for a new stable, heat reflecting brilliant red, the most elusive color to synthesize.

At Laboratory5 Inc. We bring together all elements of STEAM and tie them up into a package to promote the work each individual is doing in their fields to celebrate this work. We produce experiences so that those unfamiliar with the glorious, quirky, nerdy qualities of all areas of STEAM can be explored as an adventure to explain these fields.
