10 Rules to Better Conversations

In a world where technology is at the forefront of communications through emails and instant messages, this guide to better conversations is refreshing-and important!

10 Rules to conversation How to Talk and How to Listen

  1. Don’t multitask – be present in the moment.
  2. Don’t pontificate – Set aside your personal opinion.  Enter every conversation assuming you have something to learn.
  3. Use open ended questions – Give the other person an opportunity to describe their thoughts
  4. Go with the flow – your own stories will pop into your head – let them go.
  5. If you don’t know something, say you don’t know.
  6. Don’t equate their situation with yours – every person’s experience is different.
  7. Try not to repeat yourself.
  8. Stay out of the weeds – people don’t care about the dates, the names and other minor details.
  9. Listen -This is the most important skill.

Changing STEM into STEAM

We love a good Ted Talk video, and here’s a great one to watch about the power of STEAM in education today. The two guys in this video had ordinary jobs in the STEM industry but found themselves getting burned out. By mixing it up a little and adding some STEAM to their work, they found the key to innovation and changing their lives. If you can relate their story we definitely recommend taking a look at their Ted Talk.

At Laboratory5 Inc. We bring together all elements of STEAM and tie them up into a package to promote the work each individual is doing in their fields to celebrate this work. We produce experiences so that those unfamiliar with the glorious, quirky, nerdy, geeky qualities of all areas of STEAM can be explored as an adventure to explain these fields.
